SINGAPORE: According to UN chief Antonio Guterres on Monday (Sep 2), certain nations have “a sense of impunity” due to a lack of accountability for violations.
It’s the idea that no one can truly harm them, so they can do anything. He referred to the UN body tasked with preserving global peace and security when he said, “And so we see countries that systematically repudiate the decisions of the Security Council.
He claimed that the council’s ability to adopt and carry out resolutions has been “very difficult” due to geopolitical divisions.
During his first three-day official visit to Singapore as the UN secretary-general, Guterres was speaking with CNA.
He urged nations to uphold the United Nations Charter and international law to guarantee that “those who violate these sacred principles face accountability. ”
He remarked, “Unfortunately, there is no respect in the current situation.” There’s a feeling that these violations go unpunished and that no one is held accountable. After taking office in 2017, Guterres declared that it was time to change the UN Security Council’s makeup to better reflect “the reality of today’s world.”
