WASHINGTON: US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell stated Tuesday that the US was keeping a close eye on developments in its partner South Korea with “grave concern” and that it fully expected and hoped that any political disagreements would be settled amicably and in conformity with the law.
Following South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s unexpected late-night TV announcement earlier Tuesday declaring martial law, which slammed internal political rivals and sent shockwaves through the nation and abroad, Campbell appeared at a US State Department event.
Using the abbreviation for the Republic of Korea, Campbell stated, “We are closely monitoring the latest events in the ROK with great concern.” “We’re seeking to engage our (South Korean) counterparts at every level, both here and in Seoul.”
Campbell stated that Secretary of State Antony Blinken, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, and US President Joe Biden were being updated on the situation as it progressed. He emphasized the “ironclad” nature of the US-South Korea partnership and added:We stand by Korea in their time of uncertainty. I also want just to underscore that we have every hope and expectation that any political disputes will be resolved peacefully and under the rule of law.
