SINGAPORE: Most of us enter lifts without thinking twice about the buttons’Enthusiasts layout, the lift’s up/down speed, or the lift’s age.
However, these are things that a group of lift enthusiasts pay special attention to.
When you see a lift with no windows, doors or mirrors, it seems you’ve travelled back in time to your early years. Wilson Tan, a history buff and lift enthusiast, said.
According to Mr Tan, 23, the age of a lift can be inferred from minute details such as the brakes’ harshness or the buttons on the machine.
Lift enthusiasts like Mr Tan, who record their lift rides, have amassed thousands of followers and millions of views on their social media accounts, despite some’s opinion that this is an odd pastime.
The authorities have also decided to preserve an old lift because of their passion. As a child, Mr Tan became interested in lifts and spent many days after school taking an old lift installed at his Housing and Development Board (HDB) block. The lift, which has since been replaced, used to serve only the first, sixth, and 12th floors. I liked to just go around the lift just to take it from the first to 12th floor, 12th to sixth, and then sixth to first,” said Mr Tan, a hospitality and tourism student. He recalled feeling wistful when the lift, installed in the 1970s, was replaced with a newer lift with windows.
