SEOUL: Following the imposition of martial law, South Korea’s major opposition party announced on Sunday, December 8, that it would make another attempt to remove President Yoon Suk Yeol from office.
The interior minister resigned, and the defense minister in command of the martial law operation was taken into custody by police. They, along with Yoon, are under investigation for alleged mutiny.
As massive crowds braved chilly temperatures in yet another night of rallies outside parliament to demand the president’s removal, Yoon avoided impeachment late on Saturday.
A nearly complete boycott by Yoon’s People Power Party (PPP) killed the impeachment motion, which was put out by opposition parties and required 200 votes in the 300-member parliament to pass.
The leader of the Democratic Party (DP), the largest opposition party, Lee Jae-myung, announced on Sunday that they would make another attempt on December 14. Yoon, the principal culprit behind the insurrection and military coup that destroyed South Korea’s constitutional order, must either resign immediately or be impeached without delay,” Lee stated to reporters.
