SEOUL: While some fans of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol were inspired by his decision to defy his martial law decree on Thursday, December 12, other members of his party stated that it did not change their opinion that he should be ousted.
Yoon said Pyongyang may have hacked the elections in the South, denounced his political rivals as “anti-state forces” that support adversaries in North Korea, and justified last week’s brief martial law order as a legitimate measure to preserve democracy in a speech ahead of a second impeachment vote on Saturday.
The comments struck a number of talking points on conservative YouTube channels and represented a dramatic shift from his apology and pledge to entrust his political future to his People Power Party in a speech prior to last week’s first impeachment vote.
Although the reason for the move was not clear, Yoon showed no signs of endorsing PPP leader Han Dong-hoon’s suggestion that he step down in the upcoming months and cede power to the prime minister and ruling party in the meantime.
