TAIPEI: As Beijing continues to use military force to further its claim of sovereignty, Taiwan’s defence ministry reported Friday, February 7, that it has detected six Chinese balloons off the island. According to the ministry’s daily report on Chinese military operations on the island, the six balloons were sighted in the 24 hours leading up to 6 a.m. on Friday. In addition to the balloons, during the same time period, two government ships, six warships, and nine Chinese military aircraft were spotted close to Taiwan.
China claims the island as part of its territory and has threatened to use force to subjugate it, despite Taiwan’s claim to independence. China has increased the number of fighter jets and warships it has stationed throughout the island in recent years. It has also blocked Taiwan from international forums and poached its diplomatic friends in an effort to remove Taiwan from the international scene. The United States, Taiwan’s largest arms supplier and most significant ally, could be a flashpoint in a conflict between China and the island.
