SINGAPORE: S Iswaran, the former minister of transport, was placed in home detention on Friday, February 7, while he serves a 12-month jail sentence.
Confirming that Iswaran is no longer in Changi Prison Complex, the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) made this announcement that same day in response to CNA’s enquiries. Like every person emplaced on the Home Detention Plan, S Iswaran will serve his staying sentence at his residence under specific requirements, which include time limit tracking using an electronic monitoring tag, being gainfully occupied either in work, study or training, and reporting to SPS for counselling,” said the SPS.
Inmates who behave well while incarcerated are eligible for remission under the Prisons Act after completing two-thirds of their sentence or 14 days, whichever comes first.
If a prisoner is serving a term of four weeks or longer and has completed at least 14 days of their sentence, they are also entitled to be released on the home detention program for a maximum of 12 months.
According to SPS, eligibility for home detention is determined by a number of factors, including the inmate’s behaviour, progress, and reaction to rehabilitation while incarcerated.
