SINGAPORE: On Friday, December 6, police issued a warning about a recent surge in phishing scams targeting online applications for entry visas for other nations and associated services.
According to a police news release, at least 22 similar occurrences have been reported since November 1st, with total losses of at least S$3,000 (US$2,240).
While some victims would utilize internet search engines to find application services for digital arrival cards, automobile entry permits, and entry visas, others would get URL connections from friends or acquaintances.
The police said victims have used search terms such as “Apply for an Australian visa,” “K-Eta,” and “apply US visa.” After clicking on the URL links, the victims will be taken to phishing websites.
According to the authorities, several phishing websites were also featured as sponsored adverts or in the top search results, which enhanced their perceived legitimacy. They wouldn’t realize they were tricked until they checked with the immigration office in their destination country and found out they didn’t have a valid entry visa or hadn’t turned in their digital arrival card.
