Singapore: Compared to their European and American counterparts, Southeast Asian airports had a slower increase in passenger volume due in part to China’s gradual post-pandemic recovery.
Following Singapore’s Changi Airport’s announcement on Wednesday (Jan 22) that it handled 67.7 million passengers in 2024, aviation observers noted this fact. This represented 99.1% of 2019 levels prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Although analysts praised Changi Airport’s comeback, they pointed out that major Western airports already have more passengers than they did before the outbreak. In the first half of 2024, airport passenger volume in Europe topped pre-pandemic levels, according to the news website Aviation Week Intelligence Network.
In July of last year, the BBC also revealed that the number of journeys at London’s Heathrow Airport increased from 38.8 million in the first half of 2019 to 39.8 million in the first half of 2024. Furthermore, US airports have never been busier in 2024, according to data site Statista, with daily passenger throughput continuously surpassing pre-pandemic levels in 2024 after roughly matching 2019 traffic in 2023.
