SEOUL: Security officials told AFP that North Korean trash-carrying balloons crashed into the South Korean presidential compound on Wednesday, July 24, which prompted Seoul to deploy chemical response teams in an increasingly intense tit-for-tat propaganda war.
This is the first time that any of the thousands of balloons Pyongyang has launched since May that have struck the South Korean leader’s office directly in downtown Seoul, which is guarded by a large number of soldiers and a no-fly zone.
The presidential security service informed AFP that the chemical, biological, and radiological (warfare) response team had securely gathered the trash balloons. After investigation, results have confirmed that there were no danger or contamination of the object,” said the statement.
The North was once again sending the garbage-carrying balloons, as confirmed by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Seoul city authorities had also sent out an alert on Wednesday morning.
It stated, “Do not touch any fallen balloons; report them to the closest military unit or police station.”The North claims that this is retaliation for South Korean activists’ anti-regime propaganda balloons, which is why it has sent the balloons across the border ten times this year.
