SEOUL: North Korea denounced as “illegal” a statement made at a recent NATO summit that denounced Pyongyang’s arms sales to Russia, according to state media on Saturday (Jul 13).
North Korea “fuels Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine” by “providing direct military support” to Moscow, as denounced by NATO leaders in a joint statement this week. NATO leaders also expressed a “profound concern” regarding China’s industrial assistance to Russia.
Although Pyongyang has consistently refuted claims that it is sending weapons to Moscow, President Vladimir Putin of Russia and Leader Kim Jong Un of Pyongyang signed an agreement in June that included a commitment to defend one another militarily in the event of an attack.
According to a Saturday report from Pyongyang’s Korean Central News Agency, the foreign ministry “most strongly denounces and rejects” the NATO statement. The agency said that the declaration “incides a new Cold War and military confrontation on a global scale” and that “a new force and mode of counteraction” are needed, citing a ministry spokesman.
Seoul last month completely halted a military agreement aimed at lowering tensions and restarted live-fire drills near the demilitarised zone that separates the Korean Peninsula and on border islands after Pyongyang launched numerous bombardments of trash-carrying balloons across the border.
