SINGAPORE: Following an oil spill from a Shell land-based pipeline on Sunday morning, October 20, containment measures have been put into place.
Around 1pm on Sunday, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) reported that it had received a notification of an oil spill from a Shell land-based pipeline between Bukom Island and Bukom Kecil.
According to a media statement released on Sunday night, the leak “was reported to have stopped at source” and happened at approximately 5:30 a.m.
In response to enquiries from CNA, Shell stated that the oil leak at Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Singapore was contained at approximately 3 p.m.
“Oil sheens have been seen along the water channel between the Bukom Besar and Kechil islands since late in the morning.
“We have activated emergency response specialists to help manage the situation.””MPA has deployed seven MPA craft equipped with dispersants together with craft from its contractor Singapore Salvage Engineers.
According to MPA, Shell has positioned containment booms away from the spill site and sent out vessels with dispersants to mop up the oil that was seen nearby.
