BEIJING: On Wednesday, January 29, hundreds of millions of people in Asia celebrate the Lunar New Year with their families, saying goodbye to the Year of the Dragon and welcoming the Year of the Snake. For the 2025 Spring Festival, the Chinese celebrate with eight consecutive public holidays, a chance to eat together, see traditional performances, and light fireworks and firecrackers.
As millions of people came home to spend the holidays with their loved ones in an annual exodus that is predicted to set a new record, train stations and airports nationwide have been crowded for weeks.
And in many East and Southeast Asian countries, such as South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand, homes, offices, and shopping centres are decked out in celebratory crimson banners, which are thought to ward off evil.
People of all ages flocked to temples throughout Taiwan on Wednesday morning to pray, mediate, and offer fruit, chocolates, crackers, and nuts. Chen Ching-yuan, 36, said, “We have a custom of going to the temple and praying for better luck this year,” while she and her mother were at Taipei’s Longshan Temple.
