SINGAPORE: In order to improve flood resilience in the face of growing threats brought on by climate change, Singapore plans to invest approximately S$150 million (US$110.6 million) on drainage improvement projects during the 2025 fiscal year.
In parliament on Tuesday, February 4, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu stated that there are already 19 drainage upgrading projects underway, with six more scheduled to start in 2025.
Following two monsoon surges that caused extended rain in Singapore last month, she was answering questions from members of parliament. The first one ran from January 10 to January 13 for four days, and the second one ran from January 17 to January 19 for three days. Changi received more than 255 mm of rain during the first spell, which was more than Singapore’s monthly average of 222.4 mm in January.
According to Ms. Fu, there was one instance of flooding along a section of Jalan Seaview in Mountbatten during the two surges.A house next to the road experienced flooding in its car porch during the about three-hour-long, 0.3-meter flood on the road. According to Ms. Fu, this was the only area of Jalan Seaview’s road that flooded.
