SEOUL: After weeks of tense political standoff, South Korean authorities arrested impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol on Wednesday, January 15, on charges of insurrection linked to his proclamation of martial law on December 3, according to investigators.
Protected by a small army of personal protection that thwarted an earlier attempt at his arrest, Yoon has been holed up at his hillside home since lawmakers voted to remove him following his startling, brief declaration of martial law.
Even while the nation has a history of pursuing and imprisoning former leaders, his arrest—the first for an incumbent president—is the most recent shocking turn for one of Asia’s most vigorous democracies.
After leaving the hillside home, Yoon’s presidential convoy arrived at the headquarters of the anti-corruption organisation in charge of the investigation.
Authorities investigating President Yoon Suk Yeol on insurrection charges said in a statement that “The Joint Investigation Headquarters executed an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol today at 10.33am (0130 GMT). After almost 3,000 police officers marched on his home to arrest him in the early hours of Wednesday, a furious Yoon claimed he gave himself up for interrogation in order to prevent any violence.
