SINGAPORE: As their parents drove from Edinburgh to Glasgow in the early morning hours, two girls were asleep soundly in the backseat of the car, wrapped up and unaware of each other’s presence.
Amita and Aarya Berthier, sisters, went on to win their first international fencing competition a few hours later.
And to this day, their mother Uma remembers what a Scottish coach said to the girls afterwards. “You’re doing something unique there.” At the age of 23, Amita has already qualified for two Olympics and won three SEA Games. However, she actually began her gymnastics career before attempting football.
She was a midfielder, so she could run unstoppably from one end of the pitch to the other, Uma told CNA. You could give her a badminton racquet, a table tennis bat, or or anything. Sports were and still are her most significant source of happiness.
Amita’s father Eric was an avid skateboarder and judo practitioner, while Uma had competed in middle-distance track and field. Even though Eric and Uma were passionate about sports, they didn’t care what their daughters wanted to do.
