SINGAPORE: Hiroshi Tai, 22, will become the first Singaporean to play in the Masters after winning the NCAA individual national championship on Monday (May 27).
Tai, a Georgia Tech sophomore, finished at 3-under 285 to win by one shot over five other players at California’s La Costa North Golf Course. He shot 71 and won despite making a triple bogey on the 17th hole of his final round.
He is the fourth Georgia Tech player to win the individual title, and Tai’s performance guarantees that his team will advance to the match-play round to compete for the team title.
Tai’s victory means he will compete in next year’s Masters tournament at Augusta National. Last year, the Masters announced that the winner would receive an invitation to one of golf’s biggest tournaments. The Singapore Golf Association informed CNA that he would be the first Singaporean to do so.
