SINGAPORE: As of this Wednesday, June 12, Gutzy Asia’s owner will not be permitted to obtain any tangible advantages, including monetary gains, from running the alternative news website and its social media accounts.
The limitations result from the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA) designating Gutzy Asia and its Facebook and X account pages as Declared Online Locations (DOL) on Tuesday.
In a media release, the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) said that Minister Josephine Teo issued the declaration in response to the dissemination of “multiple falsehoods” on these websites.
After two years, it will be in force until June 11, 2026.
Suppose three or more distinct false statements of fact that are the focus of active POFMA directions are found on an internet location, such as a website or webpage. In that case, that location is designated as a DOL.
Furthermore, it is required that a minimum of three of these deceptive claims were shared on the website within the six months preceding the DOL announcement. Previously, Gutzy Asia was known as The Online Citizen Asia. Launched last year, the website came after The Online Citizen Asia’s Facebook, LinkedIn, and X account pages.
