SINGAPORE: Just weeks after emerging as an unlikely football hero for saving China’s World Cup hopes, Lions keeper Hassan Sunny donated S$10,000 of the money he received from Chinese football fans to Muhammadiyah Welfare Home on Tuesday, July 2.
After his heroics in the Singapore vs. Thailand World Cup qualifier propelled China to the Asian qualifiers final round, Hassan shot to fame in China.
Following the online distribution of images of the stall’s payment QR code, appreciative Chinese customers descended upon Dapur Hassan, his family’s food stall in Tampines, and wired funds to the establishment’s Alipay account.
Hassan informed the media that he decided to donate the funds soon after the qualifiers. “It was when I returned back to Singapore after the Thailand-Singapore game in Bangkok,” he stated.
“I realized that this money wasn’t really mine until I sat down with my family. It’s a donation, and I believe that the best thing I can do with it is to give back to the neighborhood. The money will be added to a fundraiser that the home is organising as part of a charity fiesta in end-August. Funds collected will go towards running the home.
