SEOUL: A day after President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached and suspended from office due to a martial law attempt, South Korea’s interim president, Han Duck-soo, took steps on Sunday, December 15, to reassure the nation’s friends and soothe financial markets.
According to the White House and Han’s office, Han had a phone conversation with outgoing US President Joe Biden.
According to a statement from his office, Han stated, “South Korea will continue to implement its foreign and security policies without hindrance and work to guarantee the South Korea-US alliance is upheld and strengthened firmly.”
The main opposition party declared it will not pursue impeachment of Han for his role in Yoon’s Dec. 3 martial law declaration, in another effort to stabilize the nation’s leadership. We have chosen not to move forward with impeachment procedures because the prime minister has already been confirmed as acting president and because too many impeachments could cause confusion in national governance,” Democratic Party chairman Lee Jae-myung told reporters.
