On Thursday, December 12, in a stunning upset in the final game of a 14-game series in Singapore, teenager Gukesh Dommaraju of India defeated defending champion Ding Liren of China to become the youngest chess world champion.
Garry Kasparov, who defeated Anatoly Karpov in 1985 to become the youngest world champion, is four years older than the 18th world champion.
After five-time world chess champion Viswanathan Anand, Gukesh became the second Indian to win the title.
This year’s World Chess Championship, which is being contested in Singapore for the first time, began on November 20 at Resorts World Sentosa’s Equarius Hotel When Ding, 32, realized he had made an endgame mistake that allowed his opponent to jump, he sank on the table.
With a one-pawn lead, backed by a rook and a bishop, the game looked headed for a draw, but a determined Gukesh persisted and was handsomely rewarded for it.
When Gukesh realized he was the new world champion, he broke down in tears and held his face in both hands. Gukesh told reporters, “My entire approach to this match was to push as much as possible in every single game.
