TAIPEI—As China’s military released a video claiming it was “prepared for battle” amid worries in Taipei about the potential for a fresh round of Chinese war exercises, Taiwan detected a Chinese aircraft carrier group travelling to the island’s south on Sunday, October 13.
China hates its president Lai Ching-te as a “separatist” and considers democratically controlled Taiwan to be its own territory. The Chinese military frequently conducts operations on the island.
In his keynote national day speech last week, Lai struck a hard yet accommodative tone, which infuriated China, by stating that the People’s Republic of China had no legitimacy to represent Taiwan but that the island was eager to cooperate with Beijing to address issues like climate change.
A Chinese navy force led by the carrier the Liaoning has reached waters close to the Bashi Channel, which divides Taiwan from the Philippines and links the South China Sea and the Pacific, according to a statement from Taiwan’s defence ministry. According to the report, the carrier group was anticipated to arrive in the Western Pacific.
