VIENTIANE: During a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Saturday (Jul 27), US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed Washington’s concerns regarding Beijing’s policies towards Taiwan and its backing for Russia’s war in Ukraine.
According to a senior US State Department official, Blinken discussed Taiwan and Beijing’s recent “provocative” actions towards the democratically governed island extensively with Wang. Blinken had earlier criticised China for escalating maritime tensions with the Philippines.
The official stated that although Blinken and Wang decided to continue advancing their nations’ military-to-military relations, they did not talk about nuclear arms control negotiations, which China has suspended over Washington’s arming of Taiwan.
Taiwan is the subject that they care about most in every conversation. “They perceive it as a domestic Chinese matter, the representative informed reporters accompanied by Blinken. Taiwan rejects China’s government’s claim that Taiwan is untouchable Chinese territory.
According to a foreign ministry statement, Wang informed Blinken that Taiwan was a part of China and “was not and will not be a country” and that Beijing would retaliate against any provocations by groups pushing for Taiwan’s independence.
