JAKARTA: Using social media sites like Instagram and TikTok, “Ibu (Mother) Rini” counsels young people on relationships and health.
The 50-year-old has more than 230,000 followers and millions of likes on her videos, which, among other things, educate viewers on how to value their lovers.
She initially appears to be just another Indonesian influencer working from home, producing content. However, she is actually an artificially intelligent virtual host. Her creator, Avatara Labs, is open about her origins, declaring unequivocally on her accounts that she is an artificial intelligence construct.
“We are not attempting to mislead our viewers. Ananto Wibisono, the CEO and co-founder of the company, stated, “That’s one of the ethical things that we need to do. We need to tell the audience that if you are interacting with him or her, that is actually AI.”
Its actions are compliant with a December 2018 directive on AI ethics released by Indonesia’s Communications and Informatics Ministry, which calls on companies to respect principles such as transparency, credibility and accountability.
In Indonesia, artificial intelligence (AI) is still in its infancy, yet it has enormous potential to improve economic growth and productivity.
According to research from international management consulting firm Kearney, artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to account for 12 percent of Indonesia’s GDP, or US$366 billion, by 2030.
