PARIS: Ang Peng Wee, a gifted swimmer for Singapore, had always hoped to compete for his country. He was one of the fastest in the nation in his specialty events, the 50-meter freestyle and 50-meter butterfly, and he won multiple international titles in those years.
Peng Wee told CNA, “I swam the same events as Peng Siong. “When he was not around (and was in the United States), I was considered the fastest at one point.
Peng Wee, sixty, received coaching from his father Ang Teck Bee, just like his older brother Peng Siong. The elder Ang was a pool supervisor who competed in the Olympics in judo in 1964.
Peng Siong was allowed to attend the University of Houston on a full scholarship back then. Peng Wee was on the verge of being accepted to the University of Hawaii abroad, but paperwork complications prevented him from going.
We would compete with one another, but there would be no resentment or disputes. We are Ang(s), after all, he remarked. But he claimed that his “training intensity” was disturbed by national service. Peng Wee gave up on his Olympic dream and retired from the sport at the age of 22, putting more emphasis on developing his career.
