BEIJING: A bridge in northern China collapsed amid torrential rains, killing 11 people, state news agency Xinhua reported Saturday (Jul 20).
The bridge in Shangluo, Shaanxi province, collapsed around 8:40 p.m. on Friday “due to a sudden downpour and flash floods,” Xinhua reported, citing the provincial public relations department. According to Xinhua, rescue operations were underway Saturday morning, and five vehicles had already been recovered from the water.
Images on State Television CCTV footage captured a partially submerged bridge section with the river rushing over it. More than 30 people are also missing, according to state television. Since Tuesday, rains have pounded much of northern and central China, causing flooding and extensive damage.
On Friday, state media reported that the rains caused flooding and mudslides in Shaanxi’s Baoji city, killing at least five people and leaving eight missing.
This summer, China is experiencing extreme weather, with heavy rains falling in the east and south while much of the north has been sweltering in consecutive heat waves.
