SINGAPORE: On Friday, November 1, public transport operator SMRT declared that it had established a tripartite workgroup to examine the safety and dependability of its rail system.
The action follows a string of problems with rail service, including the worst train interruption since 2017 on the East-West Line, which lasted six days.
The workgroup will consist of National Transport Workers Union (NTWU) delegates and subject matter experts from the rail operator and the Land Transport Authority (LTA), which owns the rail assets.
Lam Sheau Kai, president of SMRT Trains, will preside over it, and Yee Boon Cheow, LTA’s deputy chief executive for infrastructure and development, will serve as a co-chair. Jimmy Wee, NTWU’s Deputy Executive Secretary, will also participate in the workgroup.
In response to CNA’s questions, SMRT stated that it intends to finish the evaluation in six months and that the precise makeup of the workgroup is being determined and will be communicated once ready.
In a Facebook post announcing the workgroup, SMRT stated that since 2019, all of its MRT lines had “consistently achieved” the goal of one million mean km between breakdowns. The workgroup will assess systems and procedures throughout the MRT ecosystem in order to maintain this dependability goal.
