SINGAPORE: On Thursday, November 28, a 38-year-old man who rented a warehouse to store approximately S$5.2 million (US$3.9 million) worth of vape items was fined S$14,000 and sentenced to 10 months in prison.
When officials raided the warehouse at Woodlands Industrial Park on April 24, they seized Singapore’s second-largest quantity of e-vaporizers.
On two counts of aiding and abetting the possession of approximately 156,000 vapes and 253,000 vape pods, Toh Wee Leong entered a guilty plea.
Sentencing considerations also included two accusations of abetting the possession of over 53,000 heat sticks, another kind of tobacco product, and importing over 1,500 e-cigarettes. The court heard that Toh engaged in product-related operations to settle approximately S$80,000 in gambling debts.
Toh claims that Chua promised to pay off his debts in exchange for his cooperation in smuggling e-cigarettes into Singapore. On September 17, 2022, Toh attempted to bring over 1,500 e-cigarettes into Singapore but was apprehended and taken into custody.
Chua informed Toh that Toh would need to rent a warehouse in his name for Chua to utilize because he had paid all his debts but Toh had failed to get the e-cigarettes into Singapore.
