GENEVA: The Geneva-based World Trade Organisation (WTO) said on Wednesday (February 5) that China has filed a complaint against the US President Donald Trump over tariffs he has placed on Chinese imports.
Trump demanded that China, Canada, and Mexico stop the flow of illegal immigration and fentanyl on Saturday, ordering tariffs on their exports. He later suspended duties against the two North American nations. Trump threatened to fight the action in the WTO after imposing a 10% tax on China’s goods exports.
China’s government stated that the WTO cited that the actions seemed to be at odds with US commitments under the deal that established the trade organisation.
During the course of consultations and in any subsequent request for the creation of a panel, China retains the right to bring forward further measures and claims pertaining to the issues mentioned above,” the Chinese statement stated. The WTO’s appellate board, which has the last word on disputes, collapsed in December 2019, thereby paralysing the organization’s dispute settlement process.
Because of what they perceived as judicial overreach in conflicts, the first administration of Trump and his predecessor Joe Biden prohibited the appointment of additional judges to the body.
