SINGAPORE: The big tour groups in chartered buses are no longer there, but Chinese tourists, who are wooed by many for their travel money, are coming back to Singapore. According to industry participants, many tourists now travel in smaller groups and favour simple and cost-free solutions. They also choose less-travelled paths and ask for cultural encounters.
Since they are no longer visitors to Singapore for the first time, They want new experiences. Stanley Foo, CEO of Oriental Travel & Tours, stated, “Maybe a tour to the heartlands, seeing the life of a local Singaporean, instead of Universal Studios.” He noted that visits to lesser-known locations like Pulau Ubin and Kusu Island are among the more recent alternatives his organisation offers.
According to Mr. Wyman Poon, honorary secretary of the Society of Tourist Guides Singapore, Chinese tourists are choosing shorter and more individualised tours more frequently as a result of others sharing their experiences on social media sites like Xiaohongshu, better known as Rednote or Little Red Book.
China surpassed Indonesia as Singapore’s main source of visitors, with over 2.9 million in the first 11 months of the year. Before COVID-19, the number was 3.35 million within the same time frame in 2019.
