I entered Seventeen’s performance at the Singapore National Stadium on Saturday, January 25, as a newcomer to the K-pop scene, with an open mind but, to be honest, little idea of what to anticipate. Blackpink’s performance in May 2023 was my only other K-pop experience, so I was interested to see how their enthusiasm and flair would stack up.
There were undoubtedly big expectations. After all, these celebrities are well-known for their powerful performances, entertaining crowd participation, and their own music production.
Additionally, the group was recently designated UNESCO’s first-ever Goodwill Ambassador For Youth and became the first K-pop group to perform on the famous Pyramid Stage at the prestigious Glastonbury Festival in England last year.
The three-year wait for several Singaporean and regional Carats (the fandom’s moniker is based on Seventeen’s debut EP, Shining Diamonds) who travelled to the show was finally over on Saturday when the idols entered the stage. For the remaining fans, that moment of enchantment will occur on Sunday when the ensemble performs their second show.
The band’s fourth world tour, Seventeen Right Here World Tour, includes two performances in Singapore. Other regional dates on the tour include the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia.
