SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said on Friday, January 24, eleven individuals had been arrested for allegedly giving the ministry fake employment information. They reportedly did this to artificially increase the number of foreign workers that eight construction companies were required to hire.
Following raids at 37 sites by MOM officers, the defendants were taken into custody on Tuesday. Five Singaporeans, who are directors of the eight construction companies and range in age from 42 to 57, were among those arrested. Two permanent residents and four additional Singaporeans were also taken into custody for allegedly aiding the directors in making fake employment disclosures.
According to a media statement from MOM, these eight construction companies reportedly inflated their quota to hire foreign workers by making Central Provident Fund (CPF) contributions to Singaporeans and permanent residents not employed by them.
It is suspected that the directors asked some of these Singaporeans and permanent residents for their personal information in exchange for financial incentives. The government also stated that 16 other people are under investigation for related charges.
