Brazil: On Thursday, January 23, the Brazilian diplomat who will preside over the upcoming United Nations climate summit commended China as a model in the battle against climate change while criticising wealthy nations for failing to fulfil their obligations.
China has made “extraordinary progress” in addressing climate change, according to Andre Correa do Lago, who will chair the first climate conference in the Amazon rainforest in November. In Brasilia, the seasoned climate expert told reporters, “China is giving the developing world infinitely more support (on climate change) by lowering the price of solar panels and electric cars than if it were just providing symbolic amounts (of aid), which is what the developed countries want.
According to Correa do Lago, wealthy nations are attempting to cut back on their financial contributions to the global effort to combat climate change, which is profoundly wrong” given their obligations under the 2015 Paris Agreement. In November, Brazil will urge rich nations to increase their assistance for the energy transition of developing countries at the COP30 meeting in Belem, Amazon. We must endeavour to improve the financial participation of nations with historical obligations,” he stated.
