Among the actions are the development of comprehensive bonded zones, the improvement of international aviation hubs in Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, Xi’an, and Urumqi, and their integration with ports and other transportation hubs. Additionally, several ports would be constructed and enlarged.
China has long aimed to increase the economic strength of its western regions, which have significantly underperformed compared to its coastal provinces. However, several Western countries have criticized Beijing’s hard-line security policies, which it claims are necessary to protect national unity and border stability, and ethnic conflicts in areas like Xinjiang. The western parts of China, which include Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, Xinjiang, and Tibet, make up around two-thirds of the nation’s total land area.
Last year, the Politburo of China called for a “new urbanization” of western China in order to boost energy resources, revitalize rural areas, and increase efforts to reduce poverty. Additionally, attempts have been undertaken to expand connections to South Asia and Europe via rail freight routes and other trade corridors.
