WASHINGTON: As part of an official visit to Washington, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto met with US President Joe Biden at the White House on Tuesday, November 12, and congratulated President-elect Donald Trump over the phone.
“I will work very hard to strengthen Indonesian-United States relationship, and I would like to work towards this end that we have a strong cooperation,” Prabowo stated.
After sharing a video of his call with Trump, Prabowo, who has stated that he will pursue a non-aligned foreign policy, met with Biden in the Oval Office.
His first foreign travel since assuming office last month took him directly from China to Washington, where he met with President Xi Jinping.
In a region where its adversary Beijing has strong commercial and economic links, Washington views Indonesia, the most populous nation in Southeast Asia, as a vital ally. Additionally, Indonesia is the most populated Muslim-majority nation in the world.
Although China is one of Indonesia’s main economic partners, Jakarta has also grown to be a significant purchaser of US weapons and wants to sell more metals from its mines to the West.
