SINGAPORE: On Tuesday, November 5, Singapore kitefoiler Max Maeder received the 2024 World Sailing Awards’ first Young World Sailor of the Year title.
On Instagram, the Singapore sailing team announced that this is the first time a Singaporean has taken home a World Sailing Awards prize.
The 18-year-old won the title before Magnus Overbeck of Denmark, Vittorio Bonifacio of Italy, and Grae Morris of Australia. During a ceremony held at Singapore’s CHIJMES Hall, the award was given to a delighted Maeder.
He said that it was beautiful to see World Sailing honour young sailors and give them the chance to attend the awards ceremony, saying, “As you can see, I’m bubbly, happy, and I have a big smile on my face.”
Being able to bring it … to Singapore, the award, and to have (the ceremony) in Singapore is excellent to see, and I was so happy when I heard that they are holding it here this year, so it’s great to experience it tonight,” he said. Maeder had earlier promised to work at a curry puff stall if he won the award, and he confirmed that he would now do so.
