SINGAPORE: Tan Yi Ren prioritised “community” and ” Activity camaraderie” when he decided to open a gym in 2020.
Thus, the aptly called CrossFit Kampung, which the head coach and owner told CNA was “more than just a fitness gym.” Mr Tan aspires to raise his members’ self-esteem and “emotional sense” of wellbeing.
He said it’s more than just a feel-good, morale-boosting experience when they come to his gym and, together, do things they never thought they could, like lift a certain weight. Additionally, he proposed that it gives his gym patrons “a little bit more faith to believe”—an experience that transcends into spirituality.
As the scholar Cody Musselman noted in an article for The Conversation platform, Mr. Tan is a part of an industry that has long appropriated and incorporated such language and sentiment. With over 60 locations in Singapore combined, well-known Australian franchise brands Body Fit Training (BFT) and F45 led the way, although local competitors also gained traction.
