SINGAPORE: Passengers using Changi Airport will soon be able to skip the passport checkpoint.
According to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on Wednesday, starting on August 5, Singapore residents will be able to use their facial and iris biometrics to pass through certain automated lanes at Terminal 3.
It’s a test run for the new passport-less clearance system, which will be gradually implemented at Marina Bay Cruise Centre in December and all terminals at Changi Airport by the end of September.
According to a press release from the agency, travellers can clear immigration 40% faster with such a clearance process. According to ICA, the initiative is a component of its plan to digitise border clearance to improve every traveler’s experience and bolster border security.
According to ICA, motorbike riders will also be able to use the QR code clearance system at Singapore’s land checkpoints with Malaysia by the end of the month.
When leaving the country, foreign visitors can only clear immigration at the air and sea checkpoints in Singapore without a passport, but residents can do so both on arrival and departure.
