SINGAPORE: Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has already given an indication of his potential style of leadership, even before he officially becomes Singapore’s fourth prime minister on May 15.
Political observers told CNA that with him and the other members of the country’s fourth-generation (4G) leadership spearheading the Forward Singapore exercise, there seems to be a willingness to listen to the people more and potentially disrupt the social compact.
The observers noted that if that is a reaction to the current challenges, it is consistent with how Singapore’s various prime ministers’ leadership philosophies have changed over time to reflect their unique national and international contexts.
However, the emphasis on economic pragmatism remained constant throughout and is anticipated to stay so, according to Ms. Nydia Ngiow, managing director of BowerGroupAsia in Singapore.
He never let fear stop him from pursuing his objective: to give Singaporeans better jobs, housing, and lives overall.”
He continued that the former Minister Mentor was “more assertive, meant business, and more focused solely on getting things done” because of the situation.
From 1991 to 2001, Dr. Vasoo was a member of Mr. Lee’s Tanjong Pagar GRC. The 83-year-old, who helped outgoing PM Lee Hsien Loong and Mr. Lee’s oldest son, has been a grassroots advisor in Ang Mo Kio since he retired from politics.
