SINGAPORE: On Thursday, April 25, a motorist implicated in a multi-vehicle collision in Tampines that claimed two lives was charged in court.
In connection with the incident on Monday, Muhammad Syafie Ismail, 42, was charged with four offenses.
Syafie is charged with one crime of reckless driving resulting in death, one count of careless driving causing injury, and one count of failing to stop following an accident. The Road Traffic Act covers everyone.
Following his hospital discharge on Wednesday and the suspension of his driver’s license, he was placed under arrest. On Monday morning, four cars, a van, and a minibus were involved in the collision at the intersection of Tampines Avenue 1 and Avenue 4.
The victims were a 17-year-old Temasek Junior College student named Afifah Munirah Muhammad Azril and a 57-year-old pest control company employee named Norzihan Juwahib. Syafie was one of the six people who were brought to the hospital.
Afifah’s father, a 64-year-old van driver, an 11-year-old passenger in a car, and an 11-year-old passenger in a minibus were among the injured.
A video of the incident went viral online and attracted national attention.
Further such offenses are the subject of ongoing police investigations. Syafie may spend two to eight years in prison and lose her ability to operate any vehicle if she is found guilty of reckless driving, resulting in death.
