SINGAPORE: In response to questions from CNA on Thursday, April 18, the Elections Department (ELD) stated that the committee that examines Singapore’s electoral boundaries has not been constituted.
Before holding a general election, the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) must be convened.
According to prior polls, a general election could be called four months to a year after announcing the EBRC’s creation.
Following the announcement on Monday that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will succeed his deputy, Lawrence Wong, on May 15, the timing of an election has come under scrutiny. However, some observers have indicated that Singapore could have elections as early as September of this year, the General Election must take place by November of 2025.
The committee, composed of civil servants, will evaluate the current electoral divisions’ borders and prepare a report suggesting possible modifications, accounting for variations in the number of electors brought about by changes in the population and housing developments.
Singapore increased the number of MPs by four and eliminated six-member group representation constituencies (GRCs) in the most recent review. Four new single-member seats were created: Yio Chu Kang, Marymount, Punggol West, and Kebun Baru. Sengkang GRC was also constituted.
