SINGAPORE: Fiona Yek, a junior college (JC) student, enjoys organic chemistry because she is fascinated by how things are created.
For example, the 20-year-old would be aware of how pressure forms diamonds. And it goes beyond the fact that her career goal is to teach chemistry.
High achiever, Ms. Yek from Jurong Pioneer JC, routinely received As and Bs. Her “whole thing” was getting good grades until it wasn’t.
While en route to school one day during her first year of JC, she experienced an unexpected loss of memory. Over the following two years, the incident recurred, negatively impacting her emotional stability and once-impressive career.
The adolescent whose grades defined her was compelled to reevaluate her priorities.
It was an abrupt shift that left me feeling messed up. A day before her GCSE A-Level exam results were made public, she told CNA on Thursday, February 22, that studying was the only thing she felt she was excellent at.
