SINGAPORE: On Wednesday, February 7, some 500 UOB workers and members of the public attended a memorial service for former chairman and CEO Mr. Wee Cho Yaw.
With most of them wearing black and white, the crowd gathered at UOB Plaza 1’s atrium and on the steps as early as 2.20 pm to await the hearse’s arrival. Beyond UOB Plaza, on the other side of the street, more people lined up in front of One Raffles Place.
A background of instrumental music was playing as the emcee stated that the late Mr. Wee’s cortege will shortly arrive, causing the crowd to settle down. A few employees captured pictures and videos when the hearse, minivans, and multiple Toyota Alphards arrived at the facility a little after 3 p.m.
Five children of Mr. Wee, including his eldest son, Mr. Wee Ee Cheong, the current chief executive of UOB, stood facing employees on a tiny platform. A few of his kids appeared upset, and one of his sons repeatedly dabbed at his tears.
The funeral director thanked everyone for their support on behalf of the family, asked for a quiet moment, and then had everyone bow three times. After bowing to UOB employees, the family returned to their cars and drove to the Mandai Crematorium.
